In 2020, inspired by the COVID-related struggles of families in her community and her own feeling of helplessness, Rhiannon Menn, a mom in San Diego, set up a platform, Lasagna Love, to deliver home-cooked meals to neighbors in need. She found that there were so many moms that she knew who had lost childcare or jobs. They were just feeling great stress. So finally one day, Rhiannon Menn was just like “I’m going to make extra meals”. Before long, her effort to comfort members of her community grew into something much larger.
In just two years, Lasagna Love, a no-profit program that connected community members through gesture of kindness, goodwill and support, has successfully united participation of more than 30,000 men and women from around the world. So far, more than 200,000 meals have been delivered through the platform, feeding over 850,000 people. As more meals are delivered, the effect has become more striking.
Recently Lasagna Love has conducted a study that proves the network effect of kindness. Nearly 98 percent of recipients said they were inspired to pay it forward. Many paid it forward within days (21%), while others decided on a specific action in the future (45%). The rest made a general promise to do something kind. Lasagna Love’s research also suggests that Lasagna Love recipients feel more connected (80%) and more supported (93%) by their community as a result of receiving home-cooked meals.
“When we launched Lasagna Love, our aim was to provide comfort during a time of uncertainty,” said Menn. “As we move into our third year of operation, we recognize that our true power is much greater. We are inspiring pay-it-forward acts of kindness across communities and increasing feelings of connectedness and support among neighbors.”
    4. Why did Rhiannon Menn set up Lasagna Love?
    A. To make friends in her community. B. To offer meals to the needy neighbors.
    C. To prove her special organizing ability. D. To make money to get over her illness.

    B. 45% of the people that were helped paid it forward.
    C. Most of the recipients didn’t feel lonely any longer.
    D. She made much money and created her own business.
    7. Which of the following best describes Rhiannon Menn?
    A. Helpful. B. Modest. C. Careless. D. Humorous.

Scientists attach great importance to identifying and tracking near-Earth objects because some of them could present threats to our planet. With this in mind. NASA launched a spacecraft last November that aimed to demonstrate a possible defensive method against asteroids that might threaten the earth.
Historically, the American space agency NASA used powerful ground-based telescopes and its NEOWISE spacecraft to identify asteroids and other near-Earth objects, NASA also used tracking systems to follow the movements of asteroids.
Recently, scientists have used a new tool to discover more than 100 asteroids that had not been identified before. The new tool used a complex computing method, which was also called an algorithm, to search for asteroids that had not been discovered before. They were not discoverable because existing telescopes and image examination tools could not recognize them.
The discovery of 104 new asteroids was announced by the American-based non-profit Asteroid Institute. The organization hoped the new asteroid search tool would led to the discovery of more asteroids in the coming years. The Asteroid Institute, which is part of the B612 Foundation, explained on its website that it aimed to combine computer science, instrumentation and astronomy to find and track asteroids. Ed Lu, who is the director of the B612 Foundation and also a former NASA astronaut, said, “Discovering and tracking asteroids is key to understanding our solar system, promoting the development of space and protecting our planet from asteroid impacts.”
The institute called its discovery tool Asteroid Discovery Analysis and Mapping, or ADAM. This system used the algorithm to link points of light in different sky images that were consistent with asteroid orbits. The tool was trained to find asteroids based on existing data and to calculate their orbits well enough to be recognized by international astronomy organizations. Joachim Moeyens, a researcher from the University of Washington said the latest identifications were just the beginning. He predicted the asteroid search tool would result in thousands of new discoveries in the future.
    8. What is the purpose of identifying and tracking near Earth objects?
    A. To prove the power of telescopes. B. To make existing data more accurate.
    C. To prevent possible threats to the earth. D. To follow the movements of new asteroids.
    9. How were 104 new asteroids found?
    A. By using ADAM. B. By using satellites.
    C. By using NEOWISE spacecraft. D. By using ground-based telescopes.
    10. What is Joachim Moeyens’s attitude to the asteroid search tool?
    A. Doubtful. B. Hopeful. C. Carefree. D. Unclear.
    11. What is the best title for the text?
    A. The Methods of Astronomy Being Further Developed
    B. Fewer Than One Hundred Asteroids Have Been Found
    C. Scientists Used a Technology Tool to Discover New Asteroids
    D. The Importance of Protecting Our Planet From Asteroid Impacts

    D
Australia’s Great Barrier Reef (大堡礁) has been hit by continuous heat. Too hot ocean temperatures, as high as 7 degrees Fahrenheit above average, have attacked the reef in recent weeks even though autumn normally means cooler conditions. Scientists with Australian government agencies said some parts of the reef were turning white as a result.
When temperatures rise, corals lose their important roommates: the symbiotic algae (共生藻) that live inside corals and produce their primary source of food. Those algae give corals their colors but get expelled (排出) during periods of heat stress, causing the corals to turn white. “If the water temperature decreases, corals that are affected can recover from this stress,” said David Wachenfeld, chief scientist of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. “However, weather forecasts show ocean temperatures will likely remain above average in the next few weeks.”
The reef has been experiencing warm temperatures. The consequence was severe. After a number of corals turned white in 2016 and 2017, large parts of the Great Barrier Reef lost half of their live corals. Reefs around the world are experiencing similar climate-related damage. A worldwide research found that between 2009 and 2021, 14 percent of the world’s corals died. And another similar event raided many places, which worsened the situation in 2022.
Scientists are trying to find ways to give corals a fighting chance, like searching for reefs that could act as shelters because they experience naturally cool water. Others are raising heat resistant corals. Of course, countries must reduce fossil fuel emissions (燃料排放) over the next decade. Even if the world can limit warming to 1.5℃, 70 to 90 percent of coral reefs are likely to die off. “We need to really learn from these events,” Emily Darling, director of coral reef conservation at the Wildlife Conservation Society, said. “We need to change the current businesses. We need to take action on climate change.”
    12. What directly causes corals in Australia to change their color?
    A. The increase of their food. B. Worsening climate change.
    C. Too cool temperature in the ocean. D. The loss of algae inside their bodies.
    13. What does David Wachenfeld seem to agree with?
    A. Corals’ recovery is hard because of hot weather.
    B. The repeated high temperatures will kill all corals.
    C. The stress for corals will never disappear in future.
    D. Forecasts about ocean temperatures are not reliable.
    14. What does the underlined word “raided” in paragraph 3 refer to?
    A. Represented. B. Struck. C. Polluted. D. Occupied.
    15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
    A. The importance of scientific work.
    B. The terrible impact of climate change.
    C. Various reasons for reducing fossil fuels.
    D. Possible solutions to protecting corals.
