Ny Hlland, authr f I Was Trying t Describe What It Feels Like: New and Selected Stries, is ne f my favrite writers. In this cllectin, nne f the stries are made up f fixed patterns f wrds r ideas, and nne f them are easy. Rather, they're enigmatic, revealing themselves t the reader at unexpected times, smetimes lng after the last wrd has been read.
The bk begins with “Orbit”, a standut stry frm Hlland's 1994 cllectin The Spectacle f the Bdy. The stry centers arund a yung brther and sister, their mther ill, their father missing. There's nt much light in “Orbit”, r in many f Hlland's ther stries.
Fr the mst part, she uses the micrfictin technique t great effect, making the line between shrt stry and pem less clear. In “Music f the Old” Hlland needs just 16 sentences t craft a mving tale abut a by n the rf f a parking garage, listening t the music playing frm a club he's t yung t enter. And she uses fewer than 100 wrds in “Blue Angels” t describe the cnsequences f an air shw crash, but makes every ne f them cunt; the result is bth terrifying and pwerful.
But there's a minr cmplaint when the cllectin features stries like “Once I Wrte a Stry”, which can be read as a kind f key t the ther tales in the bk:“Once I wrte a stry abut yu,” she writes, “Yu said, What's it abut? I said, Yu.” Hlland is at her best when she drps her guard, nt all the way but just a bit, and invites the reader in, if nly fr a secnd.
I Was Trying t Describe What It Feels Like is a strng cllectin, and Hlland's writing is by turns strange and maddening in the best pssible way. She sees life as cmplicated, mving s fast in s many directins that it's impssible, r nearly s, t describe exactly: “Nthing lasts, but nthing is finished, either. The brain bils and cls, same as many things ... Nthing's lst; n grief (悲傷), unspken, frgtten.”
28.What des the underlined wrd “enigmatic” in Paragraph 1 mean?

    A.Unusual, sad and shrt.
    B.Crazy, funny and shcking.
    C.Hrrifying, realistic and musical.
    D.Meaningful, clrful and mving.
In this cllectin, nne f the stries are made up f fixed patterns f wrds r ideas可知,Hlland的故事不同尋常;根據(jù)第二段中的“There's nt much light in ‘Orbit’, r in many f Hlland's ther stries.”
30.The cllectin is a little dissatisfactry because it includes .
    A.“Orbit” B.“Blue Angels”
    C.“Music f the Old” D.“Once I Wrte a Stry”
But there's a minr cmplaint when the cllectin features stries like “Once I Wrte a Stry”可知,這部作品集由于收錄了“Once I Wrte a Stry”一文而不那么讓人滿意。
31.What type f writing is the text?
    A.A bigraphy. B.A bk review.
    C.An fficial reprt. D.An annuncement.

William Faulkner kept the wrds flwing with his favrite drink. Ernest Hemingway stpped writing just when the stry gt gd, s he'd always knw where t pick up the next day.
But perhaps the next generatin (一代) f writers may receive help frm rbts that d the hard wrk fr them. A new technlgy, put frward by Rbin Slan, an American authr, is t use artificial intelligence (人工智能) (AI) t prvide ideas fr a nvel, an email r ther articles when a writer is searching fr the best way t express himself r herself.
“They can use grammar and put wrds tgether in interesting ways,” Rbin Slan said at the Real Future Fair. Slan created a writing bt (a cmputer prgram) and had it read all f his ld science-fictin (科幻) magazines frm the 1960s and 1970s. The prgram read and learned the styles (風(fēng)格) f thse ld-schl stries.
At the fair, Slan wrked with the audience t create the beginning f a stry: “A lng, lng time frm nw in Oakland there was a rbt designed t destry all the high families. The high families were the nes f curse wh wned the seasns.”
Let's be hnest. This is nt a nvel like ne written by US writer Ray Bradbury. But smething very similar t this writing bt culd be a useful tl fr gaining inspiratin.
“I am 100 percent sure that sme years frm nw it will be used in a lt f situatins,” Slan said.
“Fr example, AI prgrams culd read all f a cmpany's emails, s that an emplyee wh is trying t get a pint acrss will have suggestins that are in keeping with the cmpany's style,” Slan said.“Or perhaps the next big mvie hit will be written by screenplay writers wh get excellent ideas frm a writing bt,” he said.
