Thugh there are filters which can change digital phtgraphs t make them similar t a painting,bvius differences still exist.A brand-new painting AI has been made public recently.Much like the pupils f the ld masters,the new AI studies the wrks f great painters like Vermeer and Van Ggh and learns t reprduce their wrks.The AI,named “PaintBt”,is the creatin f a team f researchers frm the University f Maryland,the Bytedance AI Lab and Adbe Research.
PaintBt can nt nly reprduce the wrks f different artists but create new wrks based n phtgraphs in the chsen painter’s characteristic style.T train the AI t imitate a given artist’s technique,the researchers wuld present it with between 3 and 10 reference paintings.With each reference painting it studies,the AI gradually learns t recgnize the varius characteristics f the given artist’s technique,including the strke clur,psitin and size—alng with the rder in which each brushstrke shuld be made.
PaintBt uses a technique knwn as reinfrcement learning.During the learning prcess,the AI wuld practice reprducing reference paintings,which it wuld then cmpare with the riginal wrk t see hw similar the tw were and if it was imprving its imitatin f the artist’s style.It takes arund six hurs fr the AI t learn t imitate a given painter.Once the AI has mastered a particular artist’s technique,the researchers culd present it with a new image t reprduce in the same style.The AI then uses what it has learnt t prduce a new painting,putting dwn each brushstrke ne at a time.
