Being taken ff the endangered species list desn't guarantee a carefree future fr whales.Recent research estimates that the ppulatin f Pacific gray whales ff Nrth America's West has dwindled by almst a quarter since 2016.Starting in 2019, alarming numbers f the dead were sptted n beaches and flating ffshre thrughut their habitat, frm Mexic t Alaska. The Natinal Marine Fisheries Service defined it as an “Unusual Mrtality Event”(UME).UMEs are declared when a“significant die-ff”ccurs and when infrmatin is cllected t clarify why it ccurs.
The Arctic has histrically lw levels f sea ice in recent years, upending the delicate ecsystem that sustains gray whales.Like ther migratrs, they dn't feed n their winter breeding(繁殖) grunds r alng their migratin, and must gain weight during the summer t sustain themselves thrugh the rest f the year.Observers using air phtgraphy nted the whales lked skinnier and arrived in Mexic in pr cnditin, which suggested they were nt finding enugh fd during the summer.
This die-ff is alarmingly similar t the events f 20 years ag, with anther UME resulting in a significant drp in the gray whale ppulatin.Althugh the cause was ultimately undetermined, it's thught that the ppulatin reached“carrying capacity”—it grew t large fr the envirnment t supprt it.Althugh that idea has been suggested fr this die-ff as well, it's mre likely blamed n the changing cnditins f the Arctic.Gray whales, hunted almst t extinctin by the mid-20th century, were ne f the first t be prtected frm hunting. The Eastern Nrth Pacific ppulatin rebunded withut pressure frm whaling and was taken ff the Endangered Species List;the Western Nrth Pacific ppulatin is still listed as endangered. This die-ff is a reminder that “delisting”desn't indicate a ppulatin's secure future.New threats arise, climate change upends habitats, and cntinued mnitring is needed in case a crash cmes.

C.Multiplied. D.Drpped.
解析:詞義猜測題。根據(jù)第一段中的“Being taken ff the endangered species list desn't guarantee a carefree future fr whales.”

8.What's the authr's attitude t the“delisting”? B
A.Favrable. B.Cncerned.
C.Intlerant. D.Regretful.
解析:推理判斷題。根據(jù)最后一段中的“This die-ff is a reminder that ‘delisting’desn't indicate a ppulatin's secure mnitring is needed in case a crash cmes.”
