    ?Unit 2 Wildlife Protection A卷

    1. It was Monday. Mrs Smith's dog was hungry, but there was not any meat in the house.
Considering that there was no better way, Mrs Smith took a piece of paper, and wrote the following words on it, "Give my dog half a pound of meat." Then she gave the paper to her dog and said gently, "Take this to the butcher(賣肉者), and he's going to give you your lunch today."
Holding the piece of paper in its mouth, the dog ran to the butcher's shop. It gave the paper to the butcher. The butcher read it carefully, recognized that it was really the lady's handwriting and pleasantly did as he was asked to. The dog was very happy, and ate the meat up immediately.
At midday, the dog came to the shop again. It gave the butcher a piece of paper again. After reading it, he gave it half a pound of meat once more.
The next day, the dog came again exactly at midday. And as usual, it brought a piece of paper in the mouth. This time, the butcher did not take a look at the paper, and gave the dog its meat, for he had thought of the dog as one of his customers.
However, the dog came again at four o'clock. And the same thing happened once again. To the butcher's more surprise, it came for the third time at six o'clock, and brought with it a third piece of paper. The butcher felt a bit puzzled. He said to himself, "This is a small dog. Why does Mrs Smith give it so much meat to eat today?"
Looking at the piece of paper, he found that there were not any words on it!
(1).When Mrs Smith's dog was hungry, what did she give to the dog?
    A.Some chicken.
    B.Half a pound of meat.
    C.A hot dog.
D.A piece of paper with some words on it.
(2).Mrs Smith treated her little dog quite _______.
    A.rudely B.proudly C.friendly D.angrily
(3).From its experience, the dog found that _______.
A.only the paper with Mrs Smith's words on it could bring it meat
B.a piece of paper could bring it half a pound of meat
C.the butcher would give the meat to it whenever he saw it
D.Mrs Smith would pay for the meat it got from the butcher
2.Cold weather can be hard on pets, just like it can be hard on people. Sometimes owners forget that their cats are just as used to the warm shelter as they are. Some owners will leave their animals outside for a long period of time, thinking that all animals are used to living outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness. There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.
??? Keep your pets inside as much as you can when the weather is bad. If you have to take them out, stay outside with them. When you’re cold enough to go inside, they probably are too. If you must leave them outside for a long time, make sure they have a warm, solid shelter against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of non-frozen water.
??? If left alone outside, dogs and cats can be very smart in their search for warm shelter. They can dig into snow banks or hide somewhere. Watch them closely when they are left outdoors, and provide them with shelter of good quality. Keep an eye on your pet’s water. Sometimes owners don’t realize that a water bowl has frozen and their pet can’t get anything to drink. Animals that don’t have clean and unfrozen water may drink dirty water outside, which may contain something unhealthy for them.
1.What do we learn about pets from Paragraph 1?
A.They are often forgotten by their owners.
B.They are used to living outdoors.
    C.They build their own shelters.
D.They like to stay in warm places.
2.Why are pet owners asked to stay with their pets when they are out in cold weather?
A.To know when to bring them inside. B.To keep them from eating bad food.
C.To help them find shelters. D.To keep them company.
3.If pets are left on their own outdoors in cold weather, they may????????? .
A.run short of clean water B.dig deep holes for fun
C.dirty the snow nearby D.get lost in the wild
4.What is the purpose of this text?

C.To tell an interesting story. D.To present a research result.

??? Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heart breaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.
??? I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl (貓頭鷹) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.
??? I examined the chick (雛鳥) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but noluck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.
??? The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.
??? Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.
??? A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all-LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.

??? Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger.

?In 2004, my husband, Joe and I worked in a design company in Arizona. One day, when we got back home after work, my ten-year-old daughter Becky, and Joe were united in their desire for a dog. As for me, I shared none of theirs. “But why,” they pleaded(懇求). “Because I don’t have time to take care of a dog.”
“But we’ll do it.” “Really? You’re going to walk the dog? Feed the dog? Bathe the dog?” “Yes, yes, and yes.” “I don’t believe you.” “We will. We promise.”
They didn’t. They wanted to walk the cute dog that first day. From day two, neither of them thought to walk the dog. While I was slow to accept that I would be the one to keep track of her shots, to feed and clean her, Misty knew this on day one. As she looked up at the three new humans in her life, she calculated,“The medium one is the most reliable.”
Quickly, she and I developed something very similar to a Vulcan mind meld(心靈相通). She’d look at me with those sad brown eyes of hers, send her need, and then wait, trusting I would understand—which, strangely, I almost always did. In no time, she would extend across my stomach as I watched television, and snored on my home-office couch as I worked on my design.
Even so, part of me continued to reject walking duty. Joe and Becky had promised. “Not fair,” I said to myself as she and I walked. “Not fair,” I’d loudly remind anyone within earshot upon our return home.
In September, 2008, the Great Depression hit Arizona. With that, my husband and I were both laid off overnight. During the following six months, Joe and I hurriedly rushed here and there to seek a new job, doing anything and everything we could to request employment. Every part of my life changed; no part of my old routine remained. However, Misty still needed walking.

Mrs Smith took a piece of paper, and wrote the following words on it... Then she gave the paper to her dog..."
Then she gave the paper to her dog and said gently..."
根據(jù)第五段中的"...for he had thought of the dog as one of his customers."和最后一段中的"…h(huán)e found that there were not any words on it!"
    2.答案:1.D; 2.A; 3.A; 4.B
解析:1.D。根據(jù)“Sometimes owners forget that their cats are just as used to the warm shelter as they are.”
2.A。根據(jù)第二段中的“If you have to take them out, stay outside with them. When you’re cold enough to go inside, they probably are too.”
3.A。根據(jù)文章第三段中的“a water bowl has frozen and their pet can’t get anything to drink”可知,當(dāng)水盆被凍之后,寵物就可能找不到干凈的水喝,故選A。
4.B。根據(jù)第一段的中心句“There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.
    3.答案:1.A 2.C 3.A 4.B
根據(jù)第一段中的“can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain”可知,拯救野生動(dòng)物的工作有時(shí)令人心碎,因?yàn)閯?dòng)物不一定能活下來(lái),也就是說(shuō)可能會(huì)徒勞無(wú)功,由此可知答案為A項(xiàng).
2..細(xì)節(jié)理解題:據(jù)第二段中的“She had found a young owl on the ground.” 和第三段中的“ examined the chick and it seemed fine.”
However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.
Animals are more than... in the balance of nature."
根據(jù)第三段中的"Because we need animals." Every animal has its place in the balance of nature." Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever." These laws forbid the killing of any animal or plant on the danger list."

②解析:根據(jù)該空前的"changes its coat to match the season"和該空后的"In winter it grows white fur to match the snow." F項(xiàng)中的In summer和下一句中的In winter形成對(duì)比。
③解析:根據(jù)該空后的"an extra layer under its fur coat too"可知, B項(xiàng)“你在外套里面穿毛衣嗎?” B項(xiàng)中的"a sweater under your coat"與下一句中的"an extra layer under its fur coat"相呼應(yīng)。

    7.答案:
    Paragraph 1:
????Upset as I was, I had to walk Misty while seeking a job. I felt it a heavy duty to apply my energy to the routine walk. Every time I walked Misty, I felt exhausted and fed up. One day, Misty stopped in front of me, unwilling to move forward despite my dragging the rope. Dramatically, all my anxiety, exhaustion and displeasure erupted like a volcano. I knelt down, burying my head in my hands, tears rolling down my face. Then, Misty approached me and laid her head on my knees to comfort me. I was a little embarrassed but grateful for Misty’s understanding. Then I stood up, with my steps firm and powerful.
    Paragraph 2:
????Months going by, my life changed a little and I came to enjoy my walks with Misty. It felt more like relaxation than duty. Misty shared my negative feelings and kept walking peacefully, which comforted me a lot. Thanks to Misty’s silent companion, I regained the enthusiasm to life and finally went through the hard times. With my unremitting efforts, I eventually got a new job, and so did Joe. Everything seemed to be just fine and my family went back to routine. But something did change—I had an earnest and faithful friend.

    9.答案:
    Dear Editor,
I've just learnt the news online about killing Siberian tigers and I am so sorry. I think Siberian tigers must be protected well, or they will die out. It's time that we took action to protect them from being killed.
It's said that the population of Siberian tigers is getting smaller and smaller. I think there are two main reasons for this. The first reason is that some people kill Siberian tigers for their skins and bones to earn money. The other reason is that too many trees have been cut down, which has destroyed the places where Siberian tigers used to live.
We should work together to make a pleasant home for both human beings and animals. I hope that the government will pass laws to protect Siberian tigers and punish the tiger hunters, because protecting animals is protecting ourselves.
    Yours sincerely,
    LiHua
