My best friend Carla Hernandez called me on Thursday afternoon. She asked me to meet her in the park near the playground five minutes later. She said she had a great idea! This worried me because Carla’s great ideas almost always meant big trouble for me!
I rushed outside and jogged to the park. When I saw Carla, my heart sank because her huge dog Perro was with her. I liked everything about Carla except Perro. I’d never had a pet, so I felt uncomfortable and nervous around animals. I was embarrassed to say that I was afraid of Carla’s dog. Carla smiled. “Isn’t this the perfect location for a pet show?” she asked. “All the kids in the neighborhood can show off their pets’ talents and demonstrate the things they do well. There are plenty of comfortable benches (長(zhǎng)椅) for our parents and friends to sit on. And since you don’t have a pet to enter into the show, you will be the announcer.”
“I’m sorry,” I apologized, “but that’s impossible! Crowds made me nervous and unsure. Besides, I didn’t like animals, remember?” “That’s nonsense,” said Carla. “There’s nothing to be concerned about because you’ll be great!” Carla encouraged me to be brave and confident. But just then, Perro leaped up, slobbered all over (毫不掩飾地表示喜愛(ài)) me, and almost knock me down. “Down, Perro! Stay!” I shouted. Perro sat as still as a statue. “Wow, you’re good at that,” said Carla. She thought I was talented at giving orders to pets, and asked me to get started with her immediately because we would have a lot to do.
By Saturday morning I had practiced announcing each pet’s act a hundred times. I felt my heart pounding by the time the audience arrived. The size of the crowd made me feel even more anxious. When the show began, I announced the first pet, nervously. It was a bird named Butter whose talent was walking back and forth on a wire. When Butter finished, everyone clapped and cheered. So far, everything was perfect.

On June 4th, my family and I decided to go white-water rafting(激浪漂流) down the Nantahala River in Western North Carolina. It was a perfect day to be out on the water. My father thought that we could all deal with a new situation, so he decided to bring us to go without a guide at this new, hard course. My mom and I were upset by my dad’s decision, but my brother was pleased with it. So, we had to agree with them. We got life jackets, our raft and paddles that were used to row it, and then took a bus to the drop point where we carried the raft to the icy cold water. Having finished the training, we were on our own white-water rafting.
Within the first hour, we got stuck on two rocks. Another raft had to hit ours to get us off the rocks. After about two hours, we saw a huge rock on the right side of the river. It was coming out of the water about ten feet high and about fifteen feet wide. Somehow, we ended up on top of this rock. After about a minute, water started rushing in where my brother was sitting. When he started falling into the water, I tried to pull him back. Unfortunately, we fell off together. My mother jumped in after us, but she could only get to my brother because he was closer than I was. My dad jumped out and ran up the bank of the river to get to the road, so he could see where I was. I was picked up after about two minutes by a stranger in another raft and was heading down the river toward a little resting spot.
I kept crying because I was so frightened and worried about my family.

It was Sunday. I had one last patient to see.
I approached her room in a hurry and stood at the doorway. She was an older woman, sitting on the edge of the bed, struggling to put socks on her swollen feet.
I crossed the threshold(門(mén)口), spoke quickly to the nurse, and scanned her chart, noting she was in stable condition. I was almost in the clear.
I leaned on the bed rail looking down at her. She asked if I could help put on her socks. I thought I had other priorities on the list. It’s my responsibility to arrange the issue. So instead, I launched into a monologue(獨(dú)白)that went something like this: “How are you feeling? Your sugars and blood pressure were high but they’re better today. The nurse mentioned you’re anxious to see your son who’s visiting you today. It’s nice to have family visit from far away. I bet you really look forward to seeing him.”
She stopped me in a serious, authoritative voice. “Sit down, doctor. This is my story, not your story.”
I was surprised and embarrassed. I sat down. I helped her with the socks. She began to tell me that her only son lived around the corner from her, but she had not seen him in five years. She believed that the stress of this contributed greatly to her health problems. After hearing her story and putting on her socks, I asked if there was anything else I could do for her. She shook her head no and smiled. All she wanted me to do was to listen.
And, not long after, in an unexpected twist, I became the patient, with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis at age 31. Now, 20 years later, I sit all the time --- in a wheelchair. For as long as I could, I continued to see patients from my chair.

Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Whenever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.
Her desk mate,Landy, however, was not in the cool kids’ group.Being the tallest kid in her class, she was teased by her classmates, who were always chanting “Landy,Landy, long as spaghetti (意大利面)”.Every time Landy heard those silly chants, she could feel her face burst into flames. God knew how she wished the ground to crack and swallow her!
Catherine didn’t really like it when the kids chanted “Landy,Landy, long as spaghetti”.But she never told them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Catherine went over to her grandfather for Thanksgiving. Her grandfather lives on a farm at the opposite end of town, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a peculiar one. Curling in the corner,it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
“What’s the matter with it?”She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act.’“They have a pecking(啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead.“If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
“Oh,what a poor little thing!”Catherine let out a sigh as she scooped(捧起)the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body.

I yawned (打哈欠)as I got off the last step of the bus. I had woken early that morning, and had not been able to sleep on the long ride from Riverside High, thinking about that day’s race, the Eye Opener. I had never raced in a state-wide race before. Over thirty high school teams ran, along with quite a few colleges. The rest of my team and I unloaded the bus, and we relaxed and waited for our race patiently.
“Start warming up,” our coach told us, roughly forty-five minutes after we arrived. After finishing our stretches, we headed over to the starting line, eager for the race to begin.
The starter walked to the middle of the field. “There will be two commands,” his voice boomed, ‘‘Runners set, then the gun. If you hear another shot, return to the starting line to start again. ” My heart raced as I got my legs ready to race.
“Runners set!” the starter shouted Bam! The gun fired, and he rushed out of our way. Adrenaline (腎上腺素)rushed through my body as I raced through the mass of runners. As I rounded the first turn, my schoolmates greeted me with heartening shouts. Then, in what felt like only one minute, I arrived at the one mile mark.
“6’10”, a man declared as I ran by. I tried to ignore him, but my legs began to bum as I realized I had run a mile and still had two to go. I slowed down my pace, for I knew the second mile was the worst of all three. Minutes later, I felt horrible. My legs ached, feeling like lead blocks. My vision was clouded as sweat dropped down into my eyes, and my arms felt as if they would fall off if I swung them one more time. Just as I almost reached my limit, a boy passed me. He also seemed to have lost strength but soon he was a little ahead of me.

On a recent Saturday evening, my wife, my son Jack and I were having dinner when we heard the sounds of a group of kids talking in the street, outside our home. Then out of the blue came two loud thuds (悶響) above our bedroom window, followed by the noise of laughter and lite kids running away down our street.
I turned on the external lights and rushed outside, unsure of what had caused the two thuds or what damage I could expect to see. The silence of the night was broken by the distant laughter of the neighborhood kids. At that moment I wanted to run after them. However, running barefoot on the road in the dark wasn’t a wise thing.
The light above our garage helped me to identify just what had happened. Our home had been the victim of “an egg bombing”! Faced with the need to clean up this sticky mess, I was annoyed with the kids’ bad tricks. I decided to remove the mess the next morning.
The next morning, I walked out to check the stains left by the two eggs, followed by little Jack with a book in his hand. “Where are the egg stains?” he asked. I soon found them and pointed to them. Two patches (小塊) of yellowish egg stains were on the wall above a large and wide metal awning (雨棚). Right below the awning was our front bedroom window. Our metal awning had a strong ability to protect this window from rain and other heavy things that could possibly fall down.
After I pointed to the egg stains, Jack angrily said, “Bad kids.” Then, as usual, he walked to the bench below the front bedroom window and sat down to read his storybook. Jack liked reading there each morning. While Jack was reading, I carried a mop and placed a ladder on the front wall beside the bedroom window. I was ready to wash off the dry egg stains. I knew the task was challenging. My annoyance with the bad kids reached the level of the night before. Angrily, I climbed the ladder. Minutes later, I cleaned up the first egg stain.

I was backpacking and planned to climb a volcano called Volcan Baru. At 3,474m, it is the highest peak in the country and one of the only places on Earth from where you can see the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans at the same time. It is an active volcano, but last erupted around 1550.
I set off before sunrise. It was a little cold, so I had pulled on tights under my trousers. I intended to reach the top by midday, and then return before dark to get a lift to my hotel.I’ve always felt safe travelling as a woman on my own, which I’ve done since my 20s. I love the freedom. When I got to the base of the volcano at 7 in the morning, the ranger disagreed to let me go alone, but said OK because an American couple were behind me.
The first part of the climb was beautiful. It was not dry as you might imagine a volcano might be — there were trees and flowers all around, and a dirt road for the farmers who worked around there.I walked for an hour and reached a fair height. The views were impressive, so I stopped to take a photograph.
Suddenly I heard violent barking behind me. I turned and saw two dogs running aggressively (挑釁) towards me. I expected them to stop, but they didn’t. As they got closer, I could see their teeth looked sharp, and that they looked angry. There was nowhere for me to run. I tried to keep calm, but my heart was racing. I’d never been bitten by a dog, and I couldn’t help but fear what would happen. They stopped a dozen feet from where I stood and kept barking. I knew they could move fast, so I didn’t want to try to outrun them.

A wealthy couple was preparing to throw a big New Year’s party in their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was of high cost and fixed price. They wanted to maintain a high standard of living so they didn’t mind paying a lot for it. After purchasing everything they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it off at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, not very healthy looking. His clothes were torn and he looked as if he wasn’t even able to meet his daily needs.
The couple asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods to their home. The old porter quoted just $20, a price well below the market rate for delivering. Yet, they argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $15. The porter was struggling to make money for every single meal so he needed anything he could earn.
The couple was very happy thinking how well they had bargained with the poor porter. They paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, two hours passed, but the porter still hadn’t delivered their goods.
The wife started to get angry at her husband, “I always tell you not to trust such a person but you never listen to me. Such a person is not even able to earn to feed himself for one time in a day, and you handed him everything we purchased for our big party. I am sure instead of delivering our goods to our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file a complaint against him.”
They both left towards the market. On their way, near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their goods in his cart!

Morty was checking out his library books when it caught his eye-a poster for Adventure Rocks Kids Camp. “Check this out!” Morty called to Ben and Fred as he grabbed three brochures and dashed to catch up with his best buddies. They all stopped, books in hands, to stare at the pictures of kids flying above canyons suspended from zip lines. They instantly believed the brochure’s headline: Summer won’t be complete until you Take it to the Limit at Adventure Rocks Kids Camp.
Ben broke the silence, “We have less than two weeks until registration opens, and it says the camp fills up fast.” Then an idea popped into Morty’s head. “Why don’t we sell lemonade and snacks by the side of the road? We can pool our allowance savings for the camp.” “That’s a great Idea,” Ben said.
The sun had barely come up on Saturday morning when the kids set up their business. They chose a spot, asked permission from the homeowner, and then asked to use her garden hose for water to make lemonade.
Their business went smoothly until Ben announced that they had a comparatively small stock of lemons shortly after noon. Morty decided to make their stock go further. “Fred, when the jug gets down to one-fourth full, just fill it to the top with the water hose.” Morty was thinking out loud, “I’ll change the sign and charge 30 more cents for each cup of lemonade.” Their business went on and the three were secretly proud of the little tricks they had done.
Just as Morty finished refilling the jug with water for the third time, a vehicle rounded the comer. Morty saw the minivan with his father at the wheel and his family inside. They pulled up to the sidewalk, and his brothers and sisters jumped out, each clutching a coin or two. They were eager to support their brother’s bustling business. Morty’s family bought the last of the brownies and drank the last drop of watered-down lemonade.

Magen double-checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 percent today, she’d win her class’ First-Quarter Spelling Challenge and a brand-new dictionary that came with videos and other cool stuff. Plus, Ms. McCormack had promised to do a handstand (手倒立) if anyone got a perfect score.
Three more words to go. N-i-c-e-l-y. Q-u-i-c-k-l-y. H-o-n-e-s-t-y. Wait! She’d spelled honesty, not honestly! She erased ‘-ty’ and wrote ‘-ly’ before handing in her paper. Ms. McCormack graded the papers while the students were at rest.
After a break, Magen hurried into the classroom, sitting in her seat nervously—Ms. McCormack walked to the front of the room and cleared her throat. “Congratulations, Magen! You did it!” Then, as if she were an Olympic gymnast, Ms. McCormack’s feet flipped into the air. The whole class erupted!
Ms. McCormack presented Magen with her prize. A big smile spread across Magen’s face as she read the label on the box: To Magen Carter, for her perfect first-quarter score in spelling.
“Everything OK?” Mom asked as Magen burst through the front door after school.
“Everything’s perfect!” Magen shouted, showing Mom her spelling test and prize.
Mom hugged her. “Well done, Magen”
Magen scooped up (抱起) her cat. “Can you spell nicely, Casper? And quickly and honestly, and…” It suddenly occurred to her that she had misspelled the word. Rooted to the spot, Magen reflected on how she could tell the whole class she shouldn’t have earned the prize at all. She dashed into her room and pulled out the test paper. “If I put the missing ‘t’ back in, no one would ever know,” she thought. Recalling the joyful moment, a mixture of guilt and unwillingness overwhelmed her.

    一、
    【答案】
I was beginning to feel calmer and more relaxed. I realized that being an announcer wasn’t so bad after all. Then it was Carla and Perro’s turn. Carla asked Perro to sit, but Perro didn’t sit. Carla was at a loss what to do next. Perro was too interested in watching so many pet friends at the show. Suddenly, Perro broke free from the rope, leaped swiftly and knocked over the bird Butter’s cage. It seemed that Perro was out of control and it began running around in circles.
This was a disaster, and I had to do something. “Sit!” I shouted at Perro. “Stay!” I cried. All of a sudden, everyone stopped and stared at me. Hearing my instructions, Perro sat immediately and looked at me, wagging its tail. “Wow, that is quite an achievement!” Carla smiled at me and gave me a thumbs-up. Then the audience applauded. It was amazing to get the pets to settle down. Now I am not afraid of pet dogs, and with boldness, I can speak in front of a crowd confidently.

    二、
    【答案】
I kept crying because I was so frightened and worried about my family. Thankfully, they were saved by another two rafts, and everyone was fine, just a little frightened and very cold. At the little testing spot, we had a short rest and then decided to continue the rafting. When we got back in our raft, we had only two paddles to leave for us four people. We all knew that it was going to take a very long time to get to the end.
One of the guides for another raft told us that there was an earlier place we could get out. So we planned to get out from the place. But unfortunately, we missed the exit and headed down to the ending point. We had tried our best to avoid falling into the river, and several times we narrowly escaped. Anyway, we finally got to the ending point. We got out of the water, wet and cold. I won’t raft again because of this terrible experience. All of this happened because my dad didn’t hire a guide.

    三、
    【答案】
I gradually realize the patients’ stories are a bond between the teller and the listener. Each story is different. Some are detailed; others are vague. Some have a beginning, middle and end. Others wander without a clear conclusion. Some are true; others not. Yet all those things do not really matter. What matters to the storyteller is that the story is heard—without interruption, assumption or judgement. I always reminded myself of the importance of stop-ping, sitting down and truly listening.
When my condition affected my hands, I resigned and began to teach medical students. Now I could view the whole from the perspective of physician and patient. I tell them I believe in the power of listening. I tell them I know first hand that immeasurable healing takes place within me when someone stops, sits down and listens to my story. Listening to someone’s story costs less than expensive diagnostic testing but is key to healing and diagnosis.

Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates.“ I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,”she said with a determined look.Back in school,Catherine spotted Landy sitting by herself in a corner. She kept her head down with her eyes fixed on the floor as usual. Catherine thought Landy was just like the poor little chicken, being teased and ignored by her classmates, merely due to her special height. She told other kids,“It’s time for me to make an apology to Landy.” Astonished at what she said, all the kids burst out screaming,“Talking to the long spaghetti? Are you crazy?”
But Catherine walked directly toward Landy, regardless of what they said.“Hi,Landy. I’m sorry about the spaghetti thing.” Catherine murmured an apology, her face reddening.“I know it hurts you. Can you forgive me?" She figured Landy might just walk away. But she lifted her misty eyes and nodded yes. Catherine wiped away her tears, giving her a warm hug. Moved by the scene, the other kids also came to offer their sincere apologies to Landy. From that day on, no one made up silly chants about Landy, and Catherine also gained an important life lesson that everyone should be treated equally no matter how special he or she was.

    五、
    【答案】
I gathered up my strength to speed up but suddenly fell to the ground. My world was clouded by total darkness. How I wish the ground to crack and swallow me! I could feel everybody was staring at me, widening their mouths and not being able to utter a word. The sudden silence brought sharp pain in my knees and “failure” was the only word flashing in my mind. Then the silence was broken by a deep voice, “You won’t give up so easily, will you? ” The boy ahead of me turned back and pulled me up. “Let’s run to the finishing line together!” The second mile saw its end while we ran shoulder to shoulder.
In the last mile, seeing the athletes passing us one by one, I asked the boy to rum without me. “You can win a place if you go by yourself.” I looked at him in the eyes with sweat blurring my sight. The boy breathing heavily, drops of sweat rolled down his face. He shook his head saying,“Winning a place is not that important, isn’t it? ”. Then we smiled at each other as if we had been the only runners. The last mile seemed shorter and we were relieved when we passed the finishing line together with thunderous applause. I knew they cheered for us not for winning a race but for something more important.

    六、
    【答案】
Just then, I was surprised to find one piece of glass in the window just below the awning badly cracked. “How dangerous it is! If it fell, it would.” I dared not continue to imagine what would happen next, noticing the piece of glass which was on the edge of dropping. It would fell on the very place where Jack sat down to read books every morning. A flood of fear welled up in me at the thought of this terrible scene. At that moment, the yellowish egg strains were more a warning from the kids than a bad trick when I saw the cracked glass again.
Feeling a sense of luck instead of anger, I began handling the cracked glass. After Jack was called away from the place in case of danger, I climbed the ladder slowly, approached gradually and touched the glass gently. It was no wonder that the piece fell on the bench where Jack sat just now. Jack widened his mouth at the sight of the fallen glass pieces. Seeming to be lost in thought for a moment, then Jack said to me and my wife. “I am so lucky to have those ‘bad’ kids”. “We might take a positive view of ‘bad things’ in life”, said I.

    【答案】
Terrified, I slowly kept walking, saying, “Come on, good dogs!” Suddenly, one dog dashed up towards me, sinking his teeth into my leg. “Oh, my God, I’m in a dog’s mouth and he’s trying to swallow me,” I thought to myself, with the pain taking my breath away as I felt his teeth in my flesh. I picked up a rock to fight him off, but was nervous that he would go for my neck or that the other one would come to attack me together. Facing these two aggressive dogs,I desperately felt at a loss. Hardly could I step out of the trouble on my own.
Just at this critical moment, a pickup appeared, driven by the ranger: Seeing the state I was in, he immediately stopped his pickup, opened the door, and signaled to me to get in. When we reached the base, he helped me bandage the leg up, earnestly reminding me that safety comes first while travelling. I felt relieved and grateful. And from then on, I travel carefully as well as cautiously. After all, nothing is more precious than life.

    【答案】
The angry wife asked him, “Where is that old thief? This is our goods.” She was about to add more contemptuous comments on the old porter when she suddenly noticed that the man was glaring at her resentfully. “Madam, please calm down. Jack is not a thief!” retorted the porter, “He is actually terribly sick and isn’t able to earn enough to even have a single meal of the day. Just now, on the way to deliver your goods, he was too weak to go any further in this heat of the noon. Despite falling down, he never forgot his promise and handed me$15, keeping telling me to deliver it as fast as possible.”
Upon hearing this, the husband had tears in his eyes and turned to his wife. “He was hungry, he was poor, but he was truly an honest man,” the husband admitted with a trembling voice. At that, the wife was struck dead with shame, heart beating painfully fast and banging against her ribs. How could she be angry with such a kind and responsible man? Like a child who made a mistake, she had no courage to look into her husband’s eyes. Through all these unexpected things, it eventually dawned on her that honesty has no class and she should respect everyone regardless of their financial and social status.

    九、
    【答案】
Morty’s father frowned at the sip of the lemonade. As to him, it tasted more like water. Overwhelmed with confusion, he asked directly, “What’s wrong? It tastes just like cold water.” The moment Morty heard his father’s doubt, he stood awkwardly, not sure what to say. Fred and Ben were also speechless. A moment later, they admitted what they had done. Although Morty’s father was disappointed, he said, “You still have time to correct your wrongdoings.” Hearing this, they nodded immediately.
They decided to fix their wrongdoings the next week. Ben suggested to use the money earned to prepare enough lemons first and then reduce the price. They all agreed. When they restarted their business, they even stood a sign, saying, “We send a cup of lemonade to customers who bought it last Saturday afternoon for free.” They made over 50 cups of lemonade for a constant stream of customers with a low price and over 20 cups were for free. As you can imagine, they didn’t get enough money for the camp. But they learned a valuable lesson that one should always be honest.

Aware that there was something wrong with Magen, Mom knocked on the door and entered her room. “Where’s your spelling test paper, sweetheart?” Mom asked, gazing at her eagerly. Magen took out the paper and handed it unwillingly to her mom. When Mom spotted “honesly”, Mom frowned, “Probably you don’t deserve the prize.”After thinking for a while, she soon understood what she should do.
The next day, arriving early at school, Magen pushed open the door of Ms. McCormack’s office. Hands slightly trembling, Magen gave Ms. McCormack her test paper and the dictionary. Magen confessed her spelling mistake in the test, a pink flush spreading over her cheeks. “I see.” Even though Ms. McCormack tried to contain her emotions, surprise registered on her face. Then she picked up a pen, crossed out the word “perfect” and wrote “honest” instead before handing the prize back to Magen. Magen’s jaw dropped. Ms. McCormack grinned. “For honesty.”
