M: No, something crazy happened. Washington’s best player hurt his knee in the second quarter, the same knee that he injured a few weeks ago but the coach decided to let him stay in the game.
W: Why didn’t the coach let him rest?
M: Because he told the coach that he could play.
W: Of course he’s going to say that! Those guys always pretend they’re not hurt, even when they are.
M: Well, he ended up playing pretty badly after the second quarter, and Seattle ended up winning the game by quite a few points.
W: I think that coach should get fired for leaving him in!
M: Yeah, that was what a lot of fans were saying.

C.Visiting different countries.
18.B????19.A????20.B
Today I’m going to tell you something about manners in different countries. I think you already know that people in different countries have different ways of doing things. Something that is rude in one country may well be quite polite in another. For example, in Britain you mustn’t lift your bowl to your mouth and you’d better not make a noise when you are having some liquid food. But in Japan you needn’t worry about making a noise when you drink it. It shows that you are enjoying it. In Britain you try not to put your hands on the table at all during a meal. In Mexico, however, guests are expected to keep their hands on the table throughout a meal. But it is in the Arab countries that you really must be careful with your hands. You see in the Arab countries you mustn’t eat with your left hand. This is considered to be very impolite. So, what should you do if you visit another country? Well, you needn't worry. You can ask the native people there to help you or just watch carefully and try to do as they do, not as you do at home.

Is an Online Degree Worth It?
When it comes to pursuing a degree, distance learning is definitely a great way. Don’t believe? One look at the number of students who took at least one class online—5.3 million according to U.S. News & World Report—should help to remove any misunderstanding regarding the online college experience.
The Benefits of Online Degrees
As far as the reasons to consider an online degree program, at the top of the list is the amount of flexibility provided by this approach. Being able to take online classes and study at your own pace makes the process more manageable. Others such as having faster completion time, studying anytime you want(as long as you meet deadlines)and logging in from anywhere are also reasons for choosing online degrees.
Choosing the Best Online College
Research the accreditation(資質(zhì))of the school in question. This “stamp of approval” can tell you a lot about the standards of a degree program or target institution. Consider the curriculums and credits offered by this school. Not only does this insure that you pair your educational aspirations with the right coursework, but you’ll also be able to start figuring out how many and what kind of credits you can bring with you during the enrollment process. Experience the support services of prospective colleges can also shed light on which school is right for your needs.

I started powerlifting when I was 65. I worked in real estate in Michigan for about 35 years, and when I retired I decided to lose a bit of weight. A friend’s husband, Art Little, who is a personal trainer, invited me to his gym. He introduced me to powerlifting and he is still my trainer now.
The first time I went, he gave me a broomstick to lift. The next day I told myself I wouldn’t return, but I heard a voice in my head telling me to go back. So, I ended up returning day after day. After a few weeks, my trainer encouraged me to go to a tournament to watch others compete. I was really amazed, but there was no one of my age. I asked my trainer if he thought I could do it, and he said, “Oh, sure.” The first time I competed was at a state meet. I was amazed that I won, because the others had been doing it far longer. I just came in after two months’ practice and defeated them all. After that, I knew powerlifting was for me.
My trainer had me going to the gym three times a week. I improved so quickly because I was consistent. If I was supposed to be there on Monday, I would be there, regardless of whether it was a holiday, or rainy or snowy day. I didn’t miss a day—and that’s how I’m up to the weight I’m lifting now, although the gains happened slowly. Each year, I was getting better.
I’m 79 now and I tell people of my age that they can do this, too; they just have to be consistent and start with something small.

A great deal can be learned from the actual traces of ancient human movement: the footprints of early hominids The best-known specimens (標本) are the remarkable tracks discovered at Laetoli, Tanzania, by Mary Leaky. These were left by small hominids around 3.6 to 3.75 million years ago.
Examination of the shape of the prints revealed to Mary Leakey that the feet had a raised arch, a rounded heel (腳跟), a pronounced ball, and a big toe that pointed forward. These features, together with the weight-bearing pressure patterns, resembled the prints of upright-walking modem humans. The pressures imposed along the foot, together with the length of step, which averaged 87 centimeters, indicated that the hominids had been walking slowly. In short, all the detectable features implied that the feet that left the footprints were very little different from those of contemporary humans.
A detailed study has been made of the prints using photogrammetry, a technique for obtaining measurements through photographs, which created a drawing showing all the curves and shapes of the prints. The result emphasized that there were at least seven points of similarity with modem prints, such as the depth of the heel impression, and the deep imprint of the big toe. Footprints thus provide us not merely with rare impressions of the soft tissue of early hominids, but also with evidence of upright walking that in many ways is clearer than can be obtained from the analysis of bones.
The study of fossil footprints is not restricted to examples from such remote periods. Hundreds of prints are known, for example, in French caves dating from the end of the last Ice Age, approximately 10,000 years ago. Research by Leon Pales has provided information about this period.
28.What does the passage mainly discuss?
A.The career of Mary Leakey.
B.The analysis of footprint specimens.
C.Accurate dating of hominid remains.
D.Behavioral patterns of early humans.
文章第一段“A great deal can be learned from the actual traces of ancient human movement: the footprints of early hominids (原始人類). The best-known specimens (標本)are the remarkable tracks discovered at Laetoli, Tanzania, by Mary Leaky. These were left by small hominids around 3.6 to 3.75 million years ago.(我們可以從古代人類活動的實際痕跡中了解到很多東西:早期原始人的足跡(原始人類)。最著名的標本是由Mary Leaky在坦桑尼亞Laetoli發(fā)現(xiàn)的腳印。這些是大約360萬到375萬年前的小型原始人留下的。)”引出原始人類足跡標本的話題;二、三段具體講的是科學家對于原始人類足跡的分析,最后一段“The study of fossil footprints is not restricted to examples from such remote periods. Hundreds of prints are known, for example, in French caves dating from the end of the last Ice Age, approximately 10,000 years ago. Research by Leon Pales has provided information about this period.(對化石足跡的研究并不局限于這些遙遠時期的例子。
29.The figure of 87 centimeters mentioned in paragraph 2 refers to the size of the _________.
A.hominids feet
B.hominids bodies
C.steps taken by the hominids
D.objects carried by the hominids
根據(jù)文章第二段“Examination of the shape of the prints revealed to Mary Leakey that the feet had a raised arch, a rounded heel (腳跟), a pronounced ball, and a big toe that pointed forward. These features, together with the weight-bearing pressure patterns, resembled the prints of upright-walking modem humans. The pressures imposed along the foot, together with the length of step, which averaged 87 centimeters, indicated that the hominids had been walking slowly.( Mary Leakey對這些腳印的形狀進行了檢查,發(fā)現(xiàn)這些腳印有凸起的足弓、圓形的腳后跟、明顯的球形和指向前方的大腳趾。這些特征,加上負重壓力的圖案,很像直立行走的現(xiàn)代人的腳印。腳上施加的壓力,加上平均87厘米的臺階長度,表明原始人走得很慢。)”可知原始人走得很慢說明他正在攀登,所以此處的87厘米指的是原始人當時正在攀登的臺階的高度。故選C項。
30.Why does the author mention the ?“heel impression” in paragraph 3?
A.To indicate the weight of early hominids.
B.To emphasize the size of the hominids foot.
C.To hint at a possible injury the hominid had suffered.
D.To give an example of similarity to modem human footprints.
根據(jù)文章第三段“The result emphasized that there were at least seven points of similarity with modem prints, such as the depth of the heel impression, and the deep imprint of the big toe. Footprints thus provide us not merely with rare impressions of the soft tissue of early hominids, but also with evidence of upright walking that in many ways is clearer than can be obtained from the analysis of bones.
31.What can be inferred about the footprints found in French caves mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.They show more details than the Laetoli prints.
B.They are not as informative as the Laetoli prints.
C.They are of more recent origin than the Laetoli prints.
D.They are more difficult to study than the Laetoli prints
根據(jù)文章最后一段“The study of fossil footprints is not restricted to examples from such remote periods. Hundreds of prints are known, for example, in French caves dating from the end of the last Ice Age, approximately 10,000 years ago. Research by Leon Pales has provided information about this period.(對化石足跡的研究并不局限于這些遙遠時期的例子。

In 2017, bottled water surpassed carbonated soft drinks to become the most popular beverage in the United States. While there are undeniably health benefits to more Americans choosing water over sugary sodas, the uptick(小幅上升)in bottled water sales and the marketing push for selling pre-packaged water has also contributed to an explosion of disposable container waste. Despite having some of the cleanest municipal water systems in the world, 60% of the world’s bottled water consumption occurs in the United States, even though Americans only comprise 4.5% of the world’s total population.
People justify drinking bottled water for many different reasons. Bottled water in restaurants has become somewhat of a status symbol, especially in fine dining. When I waited tables, I always dreaded asking guests for their water preference. In business settings where tablemates are unfamiliar with each other, no one feels comfortable answering for the group. Guests dining on an expense account—at least in a high-end restaurant—typically “splurge”(揮霍)on bottled water. A waiter wouldn’t dare offend a client by ordering tap water.
This results in trash bags filled with hundreds of empty glass bottles every night. In theory, the bottles and their packaging are recyclable, but history shows that, despite our best intentions, many recyclable products end up in landfills anyway.
We can all agree, hopefully, that whenever possible, restaurants should make more responsible choices about how their businesses impact the environment. The world is changing, and restaurants can’t always give people what they want anymore. Forgoing(放棄)bottled water is a very small sacrifice for those who prefer it—a drop in the bucket, as they say.
32.What problem is mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.People prefer bottled water to soft drinks.
B.Most municipal water systems break down.
C.Drinking bottled water leads to more waste.
D.The population in the United States declines.
根據(jù)第一段的第二句“While there are undeniably health benefits to more Americans choosing water over sugary sodas, the uptick in bottled water sales and the marketing push for selling pre-packaged water has also contributed to an explosion of disposable container waste.”(雖然越來越多的美國人選擇水而不是含糖蘇打水,這無疑對健康有好處,但瓶裝水銷量的上升和銷售預包裝水的營銷攻勢也導致了一次性容器垃圾的激增。)
33.What might the author be?
A.A critic. B.A restaurant owner.
C.A waiter. D.A social observer.
根據(jù)第二段的第三句“When I waited tables, I always dreaded asking guests for their water preference.”(當我在餐館當服務(wù)員的時候,我總是害怕問客人喜歡喝什么水。)
34.What do people do with the waste bottles?
A.They are thrown into seas. B.They are buried in landfills.
C.They are recycled in factories. D.They are transformed into plastics.

It seems that friends often have similar body odor. Dogs greet other dogs using their noses first, as they are sniffing each other. People are not quite so open about the process of sniffing each other out.
____36____ There is also evidence that human beings can infer kinship, deduce emotional states and even detect disease via the sense of smell. ____37____ They think they have shown, admittedly in a fairly small sample of individuals, that friends actually smell alike.
They have also shown that this is probably the case from the get-go, with people picking friends at least partly on the basis of body odor, rather than the body odor of people who become friends subsequently converging.
As they report in Science Advances, these scientists started their research by testing the odors of 20 pairs of established, non-romantic, same-sex friends. ____38____ The e-nose used a set of metal-oxide gas sensors to assess T-shirts worn by participants. ____39____ Those in the other group were asked to rate the odors of individual T-shirts on five subjective dimensions: pleasantness, intensity, sexual attractiveness, competence and warmth.
The e-nose results and the opinions of the second group of smellers were then subjected to a bit of multidimensional mathematical analysis, emerging as simple, comparable numbers.
All three approaches yielded the same result. The T-shirts of friends smelt more similar to each other than did the T-shirts of strangers. ____40____
A.Participants were paired up at random.
B.Friends, in other words, do indeed smell alike.
C.Now, some scientists in Israel have gone a step further.
D.But the size of the perfume industry suggests the scent is important in human relations, too.
E.To do this they employed an electronic nose (e-nose) and two groups of human “smellers”.
F.One group of human smellers were given pairs of these shirts and rated how similar they smelt.
G.To cast light on whether friendship causes the similarity of scents, or the similarity of scents causes friendship.
36.上文“People are not quite so open about the process of sniffing each other out.(人們對互相嗅探的過程并不那么公開。)”以及下文“There is also evidence that human beings can infer kinship, deduce emotional states and even detect disease via the sense of smell.(也有證據(jù)表明,人類可以通過嗅覺推斷親屬關(guān)系,推斷情緒狀態(tài),甚至檢測疾病。)” D項“But the size of the perfume industry suggests the scent is important in human relations, too.(但是香水產(chǎn)業(yè)的規(guī)模表明氣味在人際關(guān)系中也很重要)”符合語境。故選D項。
37.上文“There is also evidence that human beings can infer kinship, deduce emotional states and even detect disease via the sense of smell.(也有證據(jù)表明,人類可以通過嗅覺推斷親屬關(guān)系,推斷情緒狀態(tài),甚至檢測疾病。)”以及下文“They think they have shown, admittedly in a fairly small sample of individuals, that friends actually smell alike.(研究人員認為,他們已經(jīng)證明了朋友身上的氣味其實是一樣的,盡管這只是在一小部分人身上進行的研究。)” C項“Now, some scientists in Israel have gone a step further. (現(xiàn)在,以色列的一些科學家向前邁進了一步)”符合語境,其中的some scientists是下文They指代的對象。故選C項。
38.上文“As they report in Science Advances, these scientists started their research by testing the odors of 20 pairs of established, non-romantic, same-sex friends.(正如他們在《科學前沿》雜志上報道的那樣,這些科學家開始了他們的研究,他們測試了20對已經(jīng)確定的、不浪漫的同性朋友的氣味。)”以及下文“The e-nose used a set of metal-oxide gas sensors to assess T-shirts worn by participants.(電子鼻使用了一組金屬氧化物氣體傳感器來評估參與者所穿的T恤。)” 下段提到了The e-nose,故E項“To do this they employed an electronic nose (e-nose) and two groups of human ‘smellers’.(為了做這件事,他們使用了一個電子鼻和兩組人類‘嗅探員’)”符合語境,其中的this指的是上文的測試,e-nose和下文構(gòu)成原詞復現(xiàn)。故選E項。
39.上文“The e-nose used a set of metal-oxide gas sensors to assess T-shirts worn by participants.(電子鼻使用了一組金屬氧化物氣體傳感器來評估參與者所穿的T恤。)”以及下文“Those in the other group were asked to rate the odors of individual T-shirts on five subjective dimensions: pleasantness, intensity, sexual attractiveness, competence and warmth.(另一組被要求從五個主觀維度對T恤的氣味進行評分:愉悅度、強度、性吸引力、能力和溫暖度。)” F項“One group of human smellers were given pairs of these shirts and rated how similar they smelt.(一組人類嗅探員拿到了這些成對的T恤,并評估這些T恤的氣味有多相似)”符合語境。故選F項。
40.上文“All three approaches yielded the same result. The T-shirts of friends smelt more similar to each other than did the T-shirts of strangers.(這三種方法都產(chǎn)生了相同的結(jié)果。朋友們的T恤聞起來比陌生人的T恤更相似。)”可知設(shè)空處位于段尾,應(yīng)總結(jié)上文,根據(jù)設(shè)空處上文可知,相比陌生人的T恤,朋友的T恤聞起來更相似。B項“Friends, in other words, do indeed smell alike.(換句話說,朋友確實有相似的氣味)”符合語境。故選B項。

Discovering a Brother
Kieron Graham always knew he had an older brother. His adoption papers, signed and sealed when he was three months old, listed a brother named Vincent but no last name. Though Kieron spent years ___56___ (think) about Vincent, he could never track him down.
That changed in December 2017, ___57___ Kieron’s adoptive parents gave their four adopted children Ancestry DNA tests as Christmas gifts. Kieron, now 21, sent his saliva (唾液) sample in for analysis. When his results came back, he was surprised to find he had some DNA matches for relatives who ___58___ (take) the test, too. Most were distant connections, but one match was so strong that it ___59___ (label) ?“close family59. His name was Vincent Ghant. Kieron looked for him online and soon made a possible connection.” This is going to sound so wild .......but you seem ___60___ (be) my brother,” Kieron wrote on the instant messaging app.
“I was given up ___61___ adoption in 1997 and it says on my paperwork that my mother has a son with your name and your birth date. Her name is Shawn.”
“OMG do you know your real name??“ wrote Vincent, now 30.
”I think it was Tyler.?“
“OMG YES!!! You are my brother.”
“Wow,” wrote Kieron.
“This is crazy.” said Vincent.
The craziness was just beginning. As they talked, the brothers realized they lived about 20 minutes from each other, outside of Atlanta. More mind-blowing, they attended the same university and majored and minored in the same subjects: political science and legal studies.
“What are the odds we’re separated our entire lives and then end up at the same school with the same interests??“ says Kieron.
Now the brothers had the chance to make up for the ___62___ (lose) time. They decided to meet at a local tea shop that week. ”I was really nervous ,?“ says Kieron.
“I was wondering ___63___ I should say.” As he waited outside the shop, he heard someone call his name, and he suddenly found ____64____in a hug with the brother he’d thought about his entire life.
The men went inside and talked. ?“We connected,” says Vincent, ?“ _____65_____ we already knew each other.”

Aminah always studied hard while Farhan was often playing with the village boys. To help motivate him this year, their father promised to buy him a bicycle if his grades improved.
When Farhan started staying home and studying, everyone was surprised. At the end of the school year, Aminah received top marks. And, as usual, her parents gave her 100 rupees as a reward. For the first time, Farhan got top marks too. True to his word, their father came home with a bicycle. Farhan’s friends cheered when they saw it.
After a few days of watching Farhan and the village boys learning to ride, Aminah and her friends grew a little angry. They spent afternoons on the hill just north of the village, sitting in the shade of a mango tree, watching the lazy brook (小溪) flow at the hill’s foot. “Why doesn’t he let us ride, Aminah?” asked Fatima. Aminah shrugged, trying to act as if she didn’t care. “He and the other boys just want the bicycle all for themselves!” replied Shehnaz. Sarah shook her head. As they talked, the boys’ noise grew closer. Aminah looked up and saw her brother on his bicycle at the top of the hill. “Look! I can do it!” he yelled.
The boys cheered. Farhan had finally gotten the hang of it. Suddenly, his hand changed the direction and he and the bike were rushing in the direction of the girls, toward the brook. “Stop the bike!” the kids yelled. “I can’t!” he shouted. His body was locked. Aminah jumped up. “Quick! I need your scarf!”
Fatima and Shehnaz slipped their scarves off their shoulders and tossed them to Aminah. Aminah removed her own scarf as well and quickly tied thick knots, then she connected the scarves together. Farhan was seconds away. Aminah tossed one end of the scarf chain to Fatima. They stretched it across Farhan’s path, with Fatima and Shehnaz holding one end and Aminah and Sarah on the other. “Farhan, grab!” Aminah yelled as her brother’s bike approached, picking up speed. She braced herself and pulled tight. Farhan yelled as he let go of the handlebars and the bicycle sailed from beneath him.

They all tumbled down the hill. They stopped just in time to watch the bicycle crash into the brook’s rocky waters. Farhan looked at Aminah and her friends, then his bicycle, then back at his sister. The kids were all safe and sound, but his bicycle seemed ruined. Finally their father took it back to the repairman. When their father returned, he said that it would cost 100 rupees to fix the wheel and Farhan had to save money for the repair.
Farhan sighed for the money of the repair. Saving 100 rupees would take a long time. The kids together thought carefully about how to raise enough money. Then Aminah jumped up, ran into the house and, came back grinning. “We can get it fixed,” she said excitedly and held out her hand. In her palm was the reward her parents had given her for getting top marks, exactly 100 rupees. They all cheered when they saw the money, smiles dancing on their faces.
①由第一段首句內(nèi)容“They all tumbled down the hill.(他們都從山上滾了下來。)”
②由第二段首句內(nèi)容“Farhan sighed for the money of the repair.(法爾漢為修理費嘆息。)”

When their father returned, he said that it would cost 100 rupees to fix the wheel and Farhan had to save money for the repair.(when引導時間狀語從句,that引導賓語從句)
In her palm was the reward her parents had given her for getting top marks, exactly 100 rupees.(介詞短語置于句首,主句運用了完全倒裝句式;且使用了省略引導詞的定語從句“her parents had given her for getting top marks”,其先行詞為“the reward”)
[高分句型3] They all cheered when they saw the money, smiles dancing on their faces.(when引導時間狀語從句,且“smiles dancing on their faces”為獨立主格結(jié)構(gòu))
